Over Smallville's nine-year run, the show's universe has fittingly expanded; yet, fans would like to see a few characters come back.
Though we haven't see her in quite a while, Martha Kent (Annette O'Toole) is still alive and well. Even though Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) is presumably dead, the Superman mythos would have to disagree. Jimmy Olson (Aaron Ashmore) was also lost last season, but the real photog and eventual best friend to Clark Kent (Tom Welling) is still running around somewhere.
Executive producer Kelly Souders discusses the fate, fortune or future of various Smallville characters who've been missing in action.
Smallville: Executive producer answers burning questions
Perry White: "We would love for [Michael McKean] to come on right now, he's in a Broadway show. For now, it's a no."
Martha Kent: "We have the coolest idea for her to come back, so you never know. Hopefully in the future."
Lex Luthor: "There's no plans at the moment. [Rosenbaum's] got a rather busy schedule at the moment, but I know he'd love to be back and we'd love to have him back."
Smallville producer sets record straight on Chloe-Clark relationship
The real Jimmy: "By the end of the series, I think it's quite possible that you will see another Jimmy."
Old Jimmy: "That's always possible, too."
Davis Bloom: "Davis is buried very deep in the Earth, but we love [Sam Witwer]. I never say never."
Dr. Emil: "Yes."
Metallo: "We don't have anything concrete, but we would love to have [Brian Austin Green] back."
Zatanna: "I don't know if I can say …"
Smallville: Who's going to die?
Kara: "Not presently."
Sam Lane: "You know what, you never know when you get in the writers room and suddenly Sam Lane [Michael Ironside] is going to be the answer to all of our problems."
Lucy Lane: "We don't have any plans to see Lucy [Peyton List] right now but we know fans would like more of Lois' personal life explored."
Who would you like to see return?

On Smallville, will we see Clark wear a suit with some color this season? Or maybe wear his iconic glasses? — Sharlene
ADAM: Get used to the basic black, Sharlene. "He isn't quite done with his suit yet," says executive producer Kelly Souders. "This whole season is the alter ego before he starts transforming into the [Superman] that we all know." As for the glasses, she says, "There's a flirting moment with a pair of glasses. I won't say that he's definitely got them on, but I would watch the next little run. You'll see it in the first nine episodes."

Allison Mack may not have had a lot of screen time this season on Smallville, but the producers are making up for it with a fiery new love interest for Chloe Sullivan. Executive producer Kelly Souders tells us all about who Chloe's new man is, how Clark (Tom Welling) gets to see the world through Lois' eyes, the big Clark-Zod showdown and the arrival of Jor-El (Julian Sands).
TVGuide.com: You teased a big twist coming up with Chloe. Can you discuss what it is? Is she returning to the Daily Planet?
Kelly Souders: She has a couple things coming up. We've talked a lot with Allison because Chloe's big issue this year — she's having a hard time trusting people, understandably. Other people have come and gone in her life. She's got a few things below the surface about which she hasn't been very forthcoming with people around her. I think there's going to be a couple of surprises along the way, some of them more personal than others.
Smallville producer sets record straight on Chloe-Clark relationship
TVGuide.com: So Allison will have more screen time this season?
Souders: Yeah. One of the things is that we do have a big, huge cast now, which is great, so everybody ends up sharing the screen a little bit. One thing with her is that she always has something she's working on on her own, so she's developing herself and where she really stands in the whole hero-J.L.A. of it all. There's definitely a part of her in all these heroes lives that is more than the simple sidekick.
TVGuide.com: Could there be a new love interest in her future?
Souders: Oh, just maybe yes. I think there's going to be a hint of some feelings under the surface. If you pay attention, I think there's somebody she maybe has a little bit of a fire for. I'm not saying [who], I'll give you this much: It's somebody who is very charming and it would be hard for anybody not to have a fire for.
TVGuide.com: Moving over to Clark, are we going to see more of his abilities coming out and will there be more training from Jor-El?
Souders: I have to be honest. The idea is he's doing some of that at the fortress. He has so much other story going on, we don't see a lot of that for a little while, but it does come back into play. I can't quite [tease any powers] because we're breaking one of them as we speak and we're going back and forth on exactly how the power works, but I can say that it's a magnificent power.
TVGuide.com: Be honest: It's flying. Do we get to see him fly this season?
Souders: As we've said before, that's kind of his final step to becoming Superman, but at least it's on his radar now.
Smallville: Who's going to die?
TVGuide.com: How are you approaching Clark and Lois (Erica Durance) finally being a couple this season?
Souders: They have their ups and downs just like every other couple. What comes out in the first half of this season is exactly what their issues are as far as their relationship goes. You get a little more insight, particularly into Lois. In the past, Clark was always hesitant to get into a relationship. He's finally met his match in Lois and I think she's even more hesitant in some ways than he is. The issues that she's grappling with romantically will start to emerge more clearly over this first half of the season.
TVGuide.com: Will she find out Clark's secret now that they're dating?
Souders: Well… there's a really great episode called "Idol" that's coming up that if you're curious about Lois and Clark and the secret, you should definitely watch that one. As we know we have to line up with the mythos, in which case she doesn't know his secret, but watch "Idol," it's very, very fun.
TVGuide.com: I take "Pandora" to be the episode when Clark discovers the content of Lois' visions. How does he come to discover it and how does it affect the future story lines in learning this?
Souders: It greatly affects Clark's storyline and shines a big light on Zod [Callum Blue] and the other Kandorians who have come. It informs what Clark does from that point forward. He discovers it through Lois' point of view, through her visions of the future. It's Smallville, so we have to do something more visual than her just telling him. It's not another power, there's nothing unreal about it, but he gets to see the world through her eyes in a sense.
Smallville's Tess Mercer is more than evil
TVGuide.com: With Jor-El and Zod coming back, that can change the Smallville mythology. How is the time-paradox going to play out?
Souders: There's a little secret about Zod and the Kandorians: They're not exactly the way you think they are; that has a great deal to do with how the mythos would play out. In Episode 7, which is called "Kandor," a lot of their backstory comes to light and it sheds a huge light on them here presently.
TVGuide.com: When will Clark meet Zod and what happens when they come together?
Souders: He meets him in the first run [Editor's note: The first run of episodes concludes with Episode 9]. It's a little prickly. They don't have any reason to trust each other, so they don't. A lot comes to light in the middle run about each other. The tables keep on turning.
TVGuide.com: Will Clark get to meet Jor-El in person?
Souders: Tune in to "Kandor."
TVGuide.com: Here's the tricky one. Will the Jor-El in the Fortress of Solitude get to meet the Jor-El who has arrived on Earth?
Souders: How would you explain that in a scene? [Laughs] That would be a writers' nightmare. They don't quite come face-to-face at this point.

TVGuide.com: What are the prospects of a 10th season right now?
Souders: We're just going gung-ho. We are planning to break a season finale and not a series finale. We have our fingers crossed. The fans have just been amazing. Nobody knew what was going to happen when we moved to Friday night and the fact that fans showed up and have been enjoying the show, it's meant everything to us and I know it's meant a lot to the studio and the network. I think that's given us a much better chance of coming back for Season 10. We're hopeful.

The last time J.J. Abrams had the Man of Steel on his mind, things didn’t exactly work out as planned, but given his resilient career in television and film since 2002, the creator is in a better position than ever to make a hypothetical return to the property. However, despite the support of high-profile fans such as filmmaker Kevin Smith and many in the fan community, at this point, nothing is officially moving forward with Abrams’ version of Superman.
"No one has talked to me about it," Abrams told MTV News. "Obviously I’m sure Warner Brothers has a plan for what they want to do."
"Writing that script was a long process," he explained. "It was a very passionate character for me. As a kid growing up it meant a lot to me. It would be wonderful and fun to see that brought back. I don’t know what Warners is thinking or what their plan is. It would be a blast."
Though the "Lost" co-creator and "Star Trek" director’s first crack at scripting the Last Son of Krypton received mixed reviews from fans, it still has its supporters in Hollywood. Brendan Fraser, who actually suited up for a screen test for what would have been a Brett Ratner-directed film, has only praised what would have been. Abrams himself explained that while that particular draft didn’t see the light of day, there’s still a version of the script he’d enjoy he could envision being produced.
"That version of the movie—the one that was reviewed and vilified—was actually not the latest draft we had at the time and we worked on it well after that. I do think there’s a version of that movie that could be really fun to see," said Abrams. "You never really know. Everything happens for a reason."
Would you be down to see Abrams take a crack at the Man of Steel? Should Warner Brothers put the ball in his court after the success of "Star Trek?" Let us know. Follow us on Twitter!

Lois & Clark do first lip lock and more in the next CW “Smallville” episode, which is episode 6 of season 9. It’s entitled “Crossfire,” and we’ve got a few more spoilers for the show, along with a special web clip, after the jump.
In “Crossfire,” Oliver will try to help a young street girl named Mia aka Speedy, get out of her dangerous life by offering to train her. However, Mia will double cross him. Lois will ask Clark to help her get a job as an on-air television host, but they will get a big shock because the station is going to offer to hire them both, as a team.
Also as mentioned earlier, Clark and Lois will end up passionately kissing for the first time. Zod will get involved in a project with Tess that harnesses the power of the yellow son. Tess sales it to the shareholders as a clean energy generator, but we’re pretty sure Zod wants to use it to get his Kryptonian powers back.
“Smallville” episode 6 of season 9 airs Friday October 30 at 7pm central time on the CW.

Smallville’s upcoming Justice Society-themed two-parter has added another headliner. Exec producer Kelly Souders confirms that the highly anticipated eppys (titled “Society” and slated to air in early 2010) will mark the return of Phil Morris as Martian Manhunter.
Penned by comic book hero Geoff Johns, “Society” marks the arrival of Justice Society members Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and Stargirl. The abundance of special guest stars is what prompted Souders and fellow showrunner Brian Peterson to expand the episode into two parts.
“To be honest, there were so many characters and so much great story that people would’ve been robbed of some great moments if we kept it to just one hour,” says Sounders. “So now that it’s a two-parter, you won’t miss anything.”
Check out this week’s Ask Ausiello for more details on “Society.” In the meantime, riddle me this: Are you more pumped for “Society” now that MM is on board? Sound off below!

It seems like the Society is getting bigger in Smallville, as it is reported that aside from Hawkman, Dr. Fate and Stargirl another Hero will be joining them.
Drumroll please… the Justice Society episodes will feature the return of Martian Manhunter.
Sorry to disappoint he is not a new character, but the reappearance of our favorite Martian is always a welcome.
Here's a portion from the EW report:

"You will see more people than you can imagine die in the first 12 [episodes]. Luckily it's Smallville, so not all of them stick," Souders said. The showrunner would only give three hints:
* Is this in the present or the future? "A little bit of both."
* Might this be one of Lois' visions? "There might be a few people who pass away in her visions, too."
* Are any of the main characters the victims? "You can't make me ruin that. I promise you all the people you love to watch, you will still be loving to watch in episode 18, 19, 20, 21."
Now that you're clued in on all the bloodshed, who do you think is going to die and who do you think will get a reprieve?
