Superman comic sells for $1.5M, setting record #Smallville

via www.postchronicle.com

A very rare, first edition Superman comic book in top condition has been sold for a record $1.5 million in a public sale held by website ComicConnect.com.

Owners of the website said the book, Action Comics #1, was first published in June 1938 and introduced the crime-fighting superhero to fans, describing how he was born on a different planet and came to Earth.

It also introduces his alter ego Clark Kent's love interest, Lois Lane.

Stephen Fishler, ComicConnect.com founder, said the comic is one of only around 100 in existence and that a scant two or three are in a similar unrestored, high-grade condition.

"If not this book, it may be 10 or 20 years before another one like it would be offered," Fishler said.

Back in 1938, the comic sold for 10 cents.

In other Superman news, UPI reports the science-fiction television series "Smallville" has been renewed for a 10th season, the CW network said Thursday.

The news was reported by TVGuide.com.

Star Tom Welling is expected to return next season in the iconic role of superhero-in-training Clark Kent.

E! Online said Season 10 of "Smallville" will feature 22 episodes, but it is unclear if they will be the show's last season.

Millar, Gough take on Warner Bros. TV – Entertainment News, TV News, Media – Variety #Smallville

The creative team that got "Smallville" off the ground for Warner Bros. TV has filed a breach of contract suit against the studio.

The complaint filed Friday asserts that the series' original producers have been cheated out of millions in profit participation coin because Warner Bros. TV engaged in self-dealing in licensing the show to its affiliated WB Network and its successor, the CW, at below-market rates, among other issues cited.

Plaintiffs in the suit are Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, who were showrunners/exec producers on "Smallville" for its first seven seasons, and Tollin-Robbins Prods., which shepherded the development of the young Superman saga for Warner Bros. TV a decade ago.

A rep for Warner Bros. TV declined comment on the suit.

The "Smallville" suit marks the latest in a string of legal challenges from profit participants during the past dozen years accusing studios of failing to maximize the value of TV series and movies by agreeing to cut-rate licensing deals with affiliated entities rather than shopping a property to seek the highest bidder.

"Smallville" remains one of CW's top-rated shows. It was renewed earlier this month for a 10th season in 2010-11.

‘Smallville’ Roundup: Creators Sue CW and WB, Rosenbaum Stars in SyFy Comedy and a Baby on the Way? #Smallville

via www.buddytv.com

Smallville will be returning in a couple of days, but there's already too much going on behind the scenes to keep up with the show. Here's what's up beyond Metropolis:

Someone New is Heading to Smallville!

Millar and Gough Sue The CW and WB
The Hollywood Reporter pointed out that Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, along with series co-producer Tollin/Robbins Prods. have filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. TV and The CW. The reasons involve a breach of contract and a breach of fiduciary duty, but the complaint doesn't specify what damages the show incurred.

However, due to the allegations that the Smallville crew have, the networks might need to pay tens of millions of dollars to cover the reparations. The suit accuses Warner Bros. of "unfair self-dealing" and "failing to renegotiate the series' license fee to cover [the show's] production cost." It also says that the company sold the show to foreign markets unjustly, even withholding foreign taxes and misappropriating profit.

All in all, the creators are infuriated by how WB is "depriving them of compensation to which they are entitled … by failing to maximize profits from the series, all to the benefit of the vertically-integrated conglomerate Time Warner."

Michael Rosenbaum Stars in Saved by Zeroes
We reported earlier that Lex Luthor won't be reappearing on Smallville anytime soon, and that's because actor Michael Rosenbaum has a couple of projects coming up. Aside from the FOX pilot, he's also going to star in a SyFy comedy.

Reuters reports that the acclaimed actor took some of his experiences from Smallville and created Saved by Zeroes. Also starring Jonathan Silverman, the new sitcom revolves around two friends, both washed up actors from a sci-fi show with a cult following. As they hit rock bottom, they try to rebuild their lives by showing up in comic conventions and banking on their fame.

"Our show is not about being in the business, it's about being out of the business; it's the 'Non-tourage.' We're the losers you want to see back on top," Rosenbaum exclaimed.

Will a Baby Make Its Way to Smallville?
While it's unlikely that someone on this CW drama will suddenly give birth, there's been a lot of speculation regarding this lately. It's all because Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly reported a blind item involving a pregnancy, tagging Smallville.in the process.

smallville-blinditem.jpg

Posting it on his Twitter account, Ausiello gave out clues as well. The mother "is perhaps the last one you'd expect to be", while the show has a fanbase that's "one of the scariest most enthusiastic around." It isn't much to go on, but a baby would certainly throw us off guard if it's on Smallville.

Smallville Season Finale Spoiler! Someone is Gonna… #Smallville

via screencrave.com

If you’re a die hard fan of “Smallville” who’s been around since episode one, you’re probably still basking in the glow of the show’s tenth season renewal. With that in mind, the ninth season finale will have to bring a shocking blow to keep you interested and coming back for more. It turns out that the final episode will end with a major plot development, someone’s gonna die! Spoilers ahead…

Sources exclusively reported to EW, that one of “Smallville’s” major characters will die, and we believe them. No one can survive the axe of death on this show unless you’re Clark, because the axe would have to be made of Kryptonite, but other than that everyone else is fair game.

Usually I hate reading overly generalized spoilers about “who’s going to die,” especially when it’s a show that’s been on for a long time and I no longer have interest in it. My thought process is, I hope they ALL die, but they can’t and they won’t. Sigh.

The site listed 8 characters, one of which will meet their maker during the May 14th episode of “Smalliville.” We’ve got Lois, Chloe, Lana, Perry, Martha, Oliver, Tess, and Zod. That’s not exactly a small selection to choose from but it’s better than nothing. In my opinion, the only characters I care about are Lois and Oliver. Lana can take a giant leap and Chloe annoys the crap out of me. I like Martha but ‘meh.’ Perry comes in and out so he doesn’t really matter, even though I love Michael McKean, and to Zod I say, bah!

Next to Batman, Green Arrow is my favorite DC superhero so back off of him writers, BACK OFF!

‘Smallville’ exclusive: Someone is going to [major spoiler alert]! | Ausiello | EW.com #Smallville

via ausiellofiles.ew.com

Smallville’s ninth season finale will feature a cameo by one of TV’s most feared guest stars: The Grim Reaper. Sources confirm to me exclusively that producers of the everlasting superhero saga are planning to kill off a major castmember in the May 14 capper. And if the death of “Jimmy Olsen” last May taught us anything, it’s that no one — and I mean no one — is safe on Smallville. Okay, Clark is safe. But everyone else is fair game. A few characters are particularly vulnerable, which is my roundabout way of me saying the victim is listed after the jump!

I can confirm that one of these eight folks will be in grave danger come May 14:

* Lois: Okay, Clark and Lois are safe. But everyone else is fair game.

* Chloe: Allison Mack doesn’t have a contract for next season yet. Just putting that out there. Also, can you think of a more compelling hook to season 10 than Clark attempting to avenge the death of his BFF — a character who just so happens to live outside the jurisdiction of DC Comics’ mythos police?

* Lana: Rumor has it Kristin Kreuk was spotted on the Smallville set this week. Rumor also has it I fabricated the above rumor just to make trouble. Finally, there’s a rumor going around that one of the previous two rumors is 100 percent true. All joking aside, rumor has it KK is currently in Vancouver. Or is she? I’ve said too much!

* Perry: His return later this season is top-secret… so top-secret it makes one wonder.

* Martha: Her return later this season is top-secret… so top-secret it makes one wonder.

* Oliver: Green Arrow is a DC Comics property, but so was Jimmy Olsen. Death by loophole, perhaps?

* Tess: With Michael Rosenbaum attached to a new series, the odds of him returning as Lex have never been smaller. What does that mean for his placeholder? I imagine only bad things.

* Zod: He’s this season’s Big Bad. And by my calculations, this season is almost up.

So, who’s dying?! That’s for me to know and you to find out spend the next two months obsessing over in the comments section.

Will A Major Character Die In ‘Smallville’ Season Finale?

via splashpage.mtv.com

Earlier this month, "Smallville" was renewed for a tenth season, thus ensuring that Tom Welling's future as Clark Kent on the CW Network is secure for at least another year. However, rumors have emerged that at least one other member of the main cast won't be so lucky.

According to Entertainment Weekly, "a major castmember" will be killed off in the ninth season finale. The article hints that the victim will be one of the following: Lois Lane (Erica Durance), Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack), Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk), Perry White (Michael McKean) Martha Kent (Annette O'Toole), Oliver Queen (Justin Hartley), Tess Mercer (Cassidy Freeman) and Zod (Callum Blue).

The report also points out that Mack isn't under contract for next season and Freeman and Blue might be expendable once the current storyline wraps up. Lana Lang's inclusion on that list is also intriguing, as Kreuk left "Smallville" at the end of the seventh season, but returned for a few episodes in the eighth season. The article also seems to hint that Kreuk may return to the show once more.

Last week, Michael Rosenbaum dashed rumors that he would return to "Smallville," despite indications that the producers of "Smallville" still have plans to use Lex Luthor.

Martha Kent and Perry White will return to the series before the end of the season, along with Martian Manhunter and Metallo. Max Lord and Franklin Stern will debut in the same episode, which may decide the future of the Daily Planet.

The remaining episodes of the ninth season of "Smallville" will begin airing this Friday.

‘Smallville’ star behind Syfy comedy project

via www.hollywoodreporter.com

Syfy is making a push into live-action comedy with "Saved by Zeroes," a single-camera half-hour from former "Smallville" star Michael Rosenbaum, Sony and Happy Madison.

Rosenbaum and Jonathan Silverman are set to star in the project, created by Rosenbaum and based on his personal experiences. It revolves around two friends, former actors on a science fiction show that has since developed a cult following, who have hit rock bottom and must work together to get their lives back on track.

Although Syfy's lineup remains 70% drama, the network is serious about adding live-action half-hours in addition to the comedic hourlongs it now has, including the hit "Warehouse 13," Syfy senior vp Andrew Plotkin said.

"It helps us counterprogram and bring in younger audiences," he said.

Syfy has one half-hour series on the air, the animated "Outer Space Astronauts."

Plotkin said the network's brass were instantly drawn to "Zeroes" because of the involvement of Rosenbaum, Silverman and Happy Madison, but it was the concept that sealed the deal.

"This is such a personal idea of Michael's stemming from his experience on 'Smallville,' " he said. "There is a lot of character depth to it."

Plotkin can relate to Rosenbaum's experience: As an executive at Warner Bros. TV, he was involved in the development of "Smallville."

Rosenbaum got the inspiration for the show while attending numerous sci-fi/comic book conventions while on the long-running WB/CW series. He describes "Zeroes" as "Galaxy Quest" meets "Eastbound & Down."

"Through drugs and drinking, (the characters played b Rosenbaum and Silverman) didn't save money and, years later, the only thing they have left are the conventions, all they've got are their loyal, devoted fans," Rosenbaum said. "Our show is not about being in the business, it's about being out of the business; it's the 'Non-tourage.' We're the losers you want to see back on top."

Adam F. Goldberg is attached to the project, which has received a script order, as executive producer/showrunner. He and Rosenbaum first met for a script Goldberg had in development at Happy Madison for which the company's Doug Robinson thought Rosenbaum would be perfect for.

"We started talking about a bunch of nerdy things," said Rosenbaum, a self-professed geek who regularly attended sci-fi and comic conventions as a fan long before he made it as an actor. "Next thing, we were writing a horror movie together."

The two are shopping that horror pic to movie studios. Rosenbaum also is guest starring on Goldberg's pilot this season for Fox and Sony/Happy Madison.

Rosenbaum, also repped by attorney Todd Rubenstein, next stars in "Father of Invention," while Paradigm-repped Silverman will next be seen in "Swinging With the Finkels." Both are managed by Untitled.
