The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? by Jon Schnepp — Kickstarter

THE STORY

The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? is a Feature Length Documentary about the unmade movie “Superman Lives”. This film, out of all the various attempts to make a Superman movie between 1987 and 2006, would have stood the test of time and become a bonafide Cult Classic nowadays. I am not alone with my intense interest in knowing everything I can about this project, and so now I’m embarking on making a Documentary that will cover everything ever made for this film, from interviewing as many people as I can who were involved, to including actually recreating scenes from the script!!!

I’ve been interested in this film since it was first announced back in the late 90’s. Nicolas Cage was announced as Superman, Kevin Smith was announced as the Writer, Tim Burton was announced as the Director, and fans have had very heavy opinions, both positive and negative, on all of this. As news slowly bubbled out, news buzzed around about Rainbow Robot Outfits, Brainiac Skull ships, Superman not “flying”, Fighting a Giant Spider, Polar Bears guarding the Fortress of Solitude. It all sounded so crazy, so weird, so different, that I honestly was hoping that they would actually make it, just so we would have something different from what had come before. It never happened. Cut to almost 15 years later, and I really wish I could slap that “Superman Lives” disc into my player, and watch this guaranteed weird, strange, and original new take on the mythology of the Superman character. By this time, whether it was a success or failure at the box office, It would have for sure been a cult classic, due mainly to its inspired casting, and its tremendous bravery in it’s attempt to merge toy sales with the weirdness. Nicolas Cage as Superman! Test picture from failed Tim Burton ’90s movie project emerges – NY Daily News

Look up on the screen. It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s Nicolas Cage dressed as Superman!

A photo of the Academy-Award winning actor in his test costume from an aborted attempt to reboot Superman in the mid-‘90s emerged on the Internet this week.

Actor Nicolas Cage attends 2012 Giffoni Film Festival press conference last July in Italy.

The previously unseen photo gave a glimpse of what might have been had screenwriter Kevin Smith and director Tim Burton been able to get “Superman Lives” up, up and away. With it’s rubber muscle-padding, the costume looks a lot like the Bat suit that Michael Keaton wore in Burton’s “Batman.”

The picture was uploaded on DC Movies’ Twitter feed just days after Slashfilms reported that filmmaker Jon Schnepp (“Venture Bros.”) took to kickstarter to fund a documentary on the blockbuster that never was. (CLICK ON LINK BELOW TO READ MORE)

The Nic Cage/Tim Burton ‘Superman’ movie that never was – Omaha.com

bildeBefore we had 2006’s “Superman Returns” and this year’s reboot, “Man of Steel,” we almost got a Superman film from the brain of Tim Burton called “Superman Lives.” It was to star Nicolas Cage and, some say, lucky for us it never happened.

But producer and director Jon Schnepp, who has collected “Superman Lives” concept art and scripts, wishes it would have happened, mostly because it would have been epic in its terribleness. He’s proposing a documentary about the film that never was called “The Death of ‘Superman Lives:’ What Happened?” He’s running a Kickstarter campaign right now. (CLICK BELOW TO READ MORE)
